Hi,
I am looking for a good free/open-source tech-support software package to fullfil a sort of help-desk system. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks!

Re: tech support software?
Sun, January 11, 2004 - 4:38 AMDo you mean some sort of trouble ticket system? A quick Google search found the following items:
otrs.org/
www.psoft.net/HSdocumenta...ort_new.html
Also, my web host uses something called Request Tracker:
www.bestpractical.com/rt/
www.perl.com/pub/a/2001/...request.html

Sun, January 11, 2004 - 8:14 AMI've used this one www.liberum.org/ pretty damn good, especially since you can use it with Access and SQL. -

Re: tech support software?
Sun, January 11, 2004 - 8:34 PMLiberium was professional looking software. We used it for about 6 months or so. Started with Access 2000, later moved to SQL 7.0 until my boss broke the app. He was screwing around the server. I was too busy to fix it and people @ my ex-work were too lazy to use it. They'd just walk over, call or email rather than going to helpdesk site.
Keep us posted!

Re: tech support software?
Sun, January 11, 2004 - 8:53 PMBugzilla - www.bugzilla.org
Resource Tracker - www.bestpractical.com/rt/
NewStone - sourceforge.net/projects/newstone/ (bawsed on the old keystone. I used to LOVE keystone before WhitePJ bought it and destroyed it..)
And you can always google for helpdesk on sourceforge.. If you don't mind paying, perldesk is actually a very nice piece of software, and very well worth the $50 it costs.

Re: tech support software?
Fri, January 16, 2004 - 6:53 AMThis is slightly off the track of call-tracking software. Talking about other software needed in a support organization, I would suggest using VNC (virtual network computing) to perform remote maintenance/upgrades for a customer. I use this and it's a godsend.
It's free, easy to use, and is a vital piece of software for any tech-support organization to use.

Re: tech support software?
Tue, April 13, 2004 - 2:03 AMHey Everyone...
Sad news, after all the research and searching, I finally decided that the need was not strong enough to justify the time spent in even setting up anything. Thing was I was spending so much time surfing the web, I wasn't getting any work done. The place where I wanted to install it is only 40-50 PCs, really low key.
One thing that I found was that I really wanted email support. But all the packages that supported email ran on linux, or required some serious messing with IIS. Unfortunately, I was constrained to Windows.
Eventually I might just try to write my own to practice my JSP coding when I get around to it.
In my book though, the best ones seemed to be RT, mentioned above, in terms of completnessm, and MantisHelpDesk in terms of simplicity.
Thanks for everyone's help. Good luck!
