A few of the datacenters I have servers & customers in have
asked me to put some marketing information, and business cards
in their lobby, so they can refer me to some of their customers
who need infrastructure work..
Does anybody actually do this type of stuff anymore? I've never had business cards printed up, never even considered having a logo design..

Re: Business cards/old media?
Sat, January 17, 2004 - 4:02 PMOf course.. But why? I mean, have you ever read
any of the annoying tech marketing stuff you get in the mail,
or that sales reps leave on your desk? I always throw it away
and read their webpage.. -

Re: Business cards/old media?
Sun, January 18, 2004 - 1:51 AMPersonally I hate paper, but if your clients recommend it, perhaps they know people who would respond to it. Business cards are not a waste of time, just a way to keep contact info. Marketing brochures are certainly prone to bloat, but if you write it yourself and keep it concise perhaps it'll be more effective. How about something with about the size and density of a club flyer card, instead of a large folding brochure with large irrelevant pictures? At least this is a medium with a recent track record of getting peoples' attention, and you can probably get it produced much more cheaply.

Re: Business cards/old media?
Sun, January 18, 2004 - 9:05 AMBusiness cards are needed 'cause "old school" minded people are still in power and are the decision makers. They want something tangible and when the computer is not working, all they have is that little piece of paper and phone to get in touch with you. Not everyone is using PDAs and they do break down. I've been using the FREE 250 cards I got from www.vistaprint.com/ about 2 years ago. Still going and going and going.... -

Re: Business cards/old media?
Sun, January 18, 2004 - 12:04 PMI guess that's the thing. I've only worked with one
company I'd consider old-boys network minded in the
past 2 years, and it was enough to make me know
that I'd turn that sort of business down from then
on out..
But I'll probably do it anyways. I know a lithographer
who owes me a favor, and I want to get textured black
paper with inset shiny green print (to prove my geekiness
while make it memorable)

Re: Business cards/old media?
Sun, January 18, 2004 - 1:35 AMHey Michael,
I can do that... I've done it for myself (plus I have the hardware (color laser printer) and applications. Ya need help with it? I'll do it... Just let me know.
The marketing piece (business cards and brochures) are worth the try for telemarketing yourself outthere. Also... placing yourself on the web with all of what you do, your experience, etc does help catch any potiential clients towards your way.
So far, the business cards that I've made myself for people... have brought in many customers.
Let me know! I have a few blank business cards here that you can have... I can print them out if you need it (also with any logo).

Re: Business cards/old media?
Thu, January 22, 2004 - 9:51 PMBusiness Cards are a great tool! If done right, they can help you sell yourself and give a way for others to contact you. If you want to grow your business and be taken seriously by people that don't know you directly, cards are a must.
Use them in conjunction with the offers you presented, as well as card exchanges at chamber of commerce meetings and user group events.
Cards are like mini resumes and keep you name in people's minds long after you deal with them. They may not need you now, but if they have your card, they may contact you when they do.
